    Multi-factor authentication

    Level zero

A second factor on every sign-in that matters, and a phishing-resistant one as you climb.

    Level one

    • Is multi-factor authentication required of every user signing in to your own or a third party’s online services that hold your sensitive data, used where a third-party service holding non-sensitive data offers it, required of staff and customers on online customer services holding sensitive customer data, and built from something the user has plus something they know or are?
ASD wording: 7 requirements at this level
      • Multi-factor authentication is used to authenticate users to their organisation’s online services that process, store or communicate their organisation’s sensitive data.
      • Multi-factor authentication is used to authenticate users to third-party online services that process, store or communicate their organisation’s sensitive data.
      • Multi-factor authentication (where available) is used to authenticate users to third-party online services that process, store or communicate their organisation’s non-sensitive data.
      • Multi-factor authentication is used to authenticate users to their organisation’s online customer services that process, store or communicate their organisation’s sensitive customer data.
      • Multi-factor authentication is used to authenticate users to third-party online customer services that process, store or communicate their organisation’s sensitive customer data.
      • Multi-factor authentication is used to authenticate customers to online customer services that process, store or communicate sensitive customer data.
      • Multi-factor authentication uses either: something users have and something users know, or something users have that is unlocked by something users know or are.

ASD wording: 3 requirements at this level
      • Application control is implemented on workstations.
      • Application control is applied to user profiles and temporary folders used by operating systems, web browsers and email clients.
      • Application control restricts the execution of executables, software libraries, scripts, installers, compiled HTML, HTML applications and control panel applets to an organisation-approved set.

    Level one

    • Are data, applications and settings backed up on a schedule set by how critical they are, synchronised so that everything restores to one point in time, kept securely, restore-tested in disaster recovery exercises, and out of reach of ordinary users, who can neither read another user’s backups nor modify or delete any?

A self-score reads what you say is true today. Assessed maturity needs sighted evidence and tested controls across every workstation, server and account, which is engagement work. Model wording: Australian Signals Directorate, Essential Eight maturity model, November 2023 edition, CC BY 4.0.

    Method

    How this works

    What it reads

    • One yes, partly or no question per strategy per maturity level, 23 in all, each summarising what the level adds
    • Behind each question, the requirements the ASD model first lists at that level, in its own wording with attribution
    • The model’s rule: a strategy self-scores at a level when its answers there and at every level below are yes
    • The organisation sits at its lowest strategy, partly counts as not met, and a level the model leaves unchanged is carried

    Limits

    • A self-score reads what you say is true today.
    • An assessment sights the evidence and tests the controls on every workstation, server and account.
    • Answers stay in your browser; a share link carries them in the fragment, which a browser never sends.
    • A new ASD edition is a new version of the questions; an older share link renders against its own version.

    Where the engagement goes further

One question per strategy per level of the ASD Essential Eight maturity model, November 2023 edition, each summarising that level’s requirements with the ASD wording behind it. A strategy self-scores at a level when its answers there and below are yes; the organisation sits at its lowest strategy. An assessment sights the evidence and tests the controls.
